Purpose/scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to support the following:

Scope:

• interpretation and use of the FTMRC UK Guide to Good Practice in fully supported Metal Roofing and Cladding for best working methods. Including reference to BS CP143 and relevant manufacturers recommendations.
• develop an understanding of the various metals used and the environments in which they should be used.
• understand the principles of cold & warm roofs.
• the principles in selecting a suitable vapour barrier & underlay.
• selecting a suitable type of substrate for the type of roof to be used and the buildings internal environment.
• familiarisation with tools & equipment used in profiling and folding metal sheet.
• develop skills in using details to form roof penetrations.
• develop an understanding in forming internal box gutters and the detail and allowances required for rainwater discharge and thermal movement.
• develop an understanding in forming external manufacturers gutters and the detail and allowances required for rainwater discharge and thermal movement.
• understand and develop hip and ridge details vented and unvented.
• understand and develop cornice and parapet capping details and abutment flashing details.
• understand and develop facia and soffit coverings.
• develop awareness of hazards associated with working at height and with hard metal sheeting.
• correct way to recycle waste materials.

Delegates pre-requisites

Delegates should have either successfully completed training to the Basic Traditional Hard Metals standard or be able to demonstrate their ability on a pre course assessment of having a knowledge of roofing terminology and techniques.

Instruction/ supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

• an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
• successfully completed training to this standard
• at least 3 years relevant industrial experience
• a verifiable CV

Delivery

Delivery will be off the job in a training environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

• classroom
• a blend of classroom and remote

This standard is considered to contain 70% or more practical training.

This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.

Assessment

Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard are:

For the successful completion of training, delegates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures all learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.

Where this training is assessed using multiple-choice questions, a minimum of 10 questions must be asked and delegates are required to achieve an overall pass mark of at least 80%.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refresher requirements for this standard.

Learning outcomes

The delegate will be able to:

• interpret the guide to good practice and codes of practice and current manufacturers recommendations.
  
  
• demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics and compatibility of the various metals and the environments in which they can be used.
  
  
• understand the principles of cold & warm roofs.
  
  
• select a suitable vapour barrier & breather underlay and locate its position in the chosen roof build up.
  
  
• select a suitable supporting substrate for the for the type of roof to be used and the buildings internal environment
  
  
• demonstrate awareness and use of tools and equipment used in profiling, folding and curving metal sheet
  
  
• correctly use tools and equipment and developed skills in various details to form roof and roof light penetrations.
  
  
• demonstrate skills to fabricate and install the following:
  • internal box gutters including allowance for rainwater discharge and thermal movement.
  • hip and ridge details (vented and unvented batten roll and standing seam)
  • cornice and parapet capping and abutment flashing details.
  • facia and soffit coverings and details.
  • roof light penetrations and chimney flashing.
  • general weathering’s and roof valleys 10 & 25 degree pitch.
  • alternative verge details.
  • general vertical wall covering with window penetrations.
  • standard Dormer details.
    
    
• install external manufacturers gutters and the detail and allowances required for rainwater discharge and thermal movement.
  
  
• assess hazards associated with working at height and with hard metal sheeting
  
  
• clean all work areas and store scrap metal ready for recycling.
