Overview

The purpose of this standard is to give the candidate an understanding of the Abrasive Wheels regulations and the hire of this equipment under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER).

Minimum 1 day of 6 learning hours

Purpose/Scope

The purpose of this standard is to give the candidate an understanding of the Abrasive Wheels regulations and the hire of this equipment under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER). It will focus training on all aspects of correct hire procedures, basic maintenance, service inspections, pre and off hire checks, recording requirements and the correct mounting, setting and use of cutting and grinding machines using abrasive wheels and cutting/grinding discs.

Scope:

  • regulations and legal obligations
  • storing and handling abrasive wheels and cutting discs
  • examining and testing equipment and wheels/discs for damage
  • pre and off hire checks
  • removal of wheels/discs
  • selection, testing & mounting of new wheel/disc
  • resetting rests & guarding
  • PPE selection & usage
  • demonstrating and instructing in the use of, safe operation
  • hazard awareness
  • inspecting and recording procedures.

Candidate Pre-requisites

There are no candidate pre-requisites as part of this standard.

Instruction/ Supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • successfully completed training to this standard
  • at least 2 years relevant industrial experience
  • a verifiable CV

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes, and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.

Quality Assurance

Quality Assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the Training Organisation can meet the requirements of the Training Standard. Approved Training Organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB Quality Assurance team.

Renewal

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

Describe the regulations and legal obligations relating to the use of abrasive wheels and cutting and grinding equipment.  
Store and handle abrasive wheels, cutting discs and grinding discs and associated equipment.  
Examine and test equipment and components for damage. Wheels, cutting discs, grinding discs, cables, guards, rests.
Conduct pre and off hire checks.  
Remove wheels and discs.  
Follow procedures for reporting and safe disposal of damaged wheels, discs and components.  
Select, test & mount new wheels and discs. Marking system, shelf life, traceable number, suitability for intended use.
Reset rests & guarding. Position, adjustment of guards and handles, use of rest
Select PPE & advise on use Eye protection, respiratory protection.

Instruct on safe operation of:

  • grinding machines
  • cutting machines
  • bench machines
Correct use, set-up, operating speeds, handling, mounting, disc types, wheel types, cutting techniques, guarding, tool rests, PPE, ventilation, cleaning, removal of flammable materials from work area, start up and close down procedures, securing bench machines prior to use.
Instruct on the hazards and dangers of incorrect use of equipment. Overheating, incorrect mounting, burst disc, disc disintegration, injury, incorrect wheel/disc use, incorrect speed, blocked air ports, obstructions, dust/hot/abrasive particles ejection.
Complete and record documentation relating to the hire of the equipment.
