Lean construction module 4: Lean Construction and Waste
Duration
3 days
Purpose/scope
On completion of this training participants will be able to:
- Undertake a site walk to identify different forms of waste in their workplace
- Categorise the wastes and brainstorm actions to eliminate or reduce them
- Develop an action plan to implement improvements.
Delivery
The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:
- face to face learning environment only (such as classroom/workshop etc.)
- a blend of face to face and virtual
This standard is predominantly practical training
This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level

Quality assurance
Recognised
CITB will gain assurance through the Recognised Organisation’s quality arrangements.
Approved Training Organisation’s will be required to supply confirmation of approval (centre approval and scheme approval) with the related Recognised Organisation’s awarding organisation or body. In most cases this will be an approval certificate provided by the Recognised Organisation’s awarding organisation or body, listing the routes, qualifications, and categories they are approved to deliver. In addition, a copy of the most recent external quality assurance monitoring report will be required, relating to the standard that you wish to be approved for.
This information will be reviewed by CITB’s quality assurance team. Approval will be subject to the required Recognised Organisation’s documentation being supplied by you. As part of the quality assurance checks, CITB may confirm the accuracy of documentation with the issuing organisation.
Please refer to the Requirements for Approved Training Organisations Appendix 6 for further guidance on quality assurance.

Workshop Delivery Summary
This workshop is structured around a practical, on-site activity designed to support waste identification and reduction using Lean methods. Site access is required before, during, and after the first session to run the workshop as intended.
Standard On-Site Format
The delivery follows two key stages:
- Workshop 1 – Initiate
Participants engage in site-based activities to identify areas of waste. They develop ideas for improvements and form an action plan, which is reviewed and signed off by senior management. - Workshop 2 – Check and Continue
Participants revisit the site to measure progress against the baseline, evaluate improvements, and explore how to maintain and scale Lean practices. Lessons learned and potential barriers are also discussed.
Alternative Off-Site Approach
If site access is not possible or participants are working remotely, the workshop can be adapted to include:
- A shortened version focusing on Workshop 1 videos and discussion.
- Replacement of the site walk with home or workplace improvement activities.
- Flexible delivery in smaller segments or over varied time intervals.
Remote participants are guided to:
- Select and photograph an improvement area.
- Share findings and insights with the group.
- Create individual action plans or work collaboratively on a shared activity.
