Erect external stonemasonry introduction

Overview

The purpose of this standard is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to support the following scope: identify, interpret and select the required information and resource, comply with risk assessment requirements to erect basic external stonemasonry structures, identify and use relevant methods, techniques and terminology to erect basic external stonemasonry structures to a defined specification.

Duration

12 hours

Purpose/scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to support the following:

Scope:

  • identify, interpret and select the required information and resource
  • comply with risk assessment requirements to erect basic external stonemasonry structures
  • identify and use relevant methods, techniques and terminology to erect basic external stonemasonry structures to a defined specification

Learner pre-requisites

A basic knowledge of Lime Mortars and Setting Out terminology and techniques would be beneficial

Instruction/ supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
  • at least 2 years industrial experience relevant to the scope of the standard
  • a verifiable CV

Delivery

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for learners to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation

The learning environment, class size and learner/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable learners to achieve the learning outcomes

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • face to face learning environment only (such as classroom/workshop etc.)

This standard is predominantly practical training

This standard is considered to be set at an entry level

Assessment

Informally Assessed

For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the learner has achieved all learning outcomes

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Standard Classification

Lifetime (Please note standards using this classification will only be grant aided once per user)

Working group approval date

November 2024

Review cycle

On request or 60 months (5 years) from approval date

Learning outcomes

The learner will be able to:

Identify, interpret and select the required information and resources to erect basic external stonemasonry structures

Delivery Guidance:

The following are considered to be sources of information:

  • Documents
  • drawings
  • specifications
  • fixing schedules
  • method statement
  • risk assessment
  • safety data sheets
  • manufactures instructions
  • working notes

The following are considered to be suitable resources that can be selected:

  • Tools and equipment:
    • straight edge
    • level
    • digital/laser measuring equipment
    • tape measure
    • string line
    • trowel
    • gauging stick
    • pointing tools
    • churn brush
    • protection
    • PPE
  • Materials:
    • mortar
    • stone
    • wall ties
    • DPC membrane

Assessment Criteria:

  • The tutor must be satisfied that the learner can demonstrate understanding of the information and resources to erect basic external stonemasonry structures.

Comply with the requirements of the risk assessment for the work to be carried out

Delivery Guidance:

Before any work starts the following checks should be made.

  • equipment and resources
  • visual inspection of areas

Hazards & PPE:

  • correct PPE worn at all times
  • manual handling requirements
  • as identified within the risk assessment

The following terminology should be covered:

  • hazard
  • risk
  • personal protective equipment (PPE)

Assessment Criteria:

The tutor must be satisfied that the learner can demonstrate understanding of how to comply with risk assessments to erect basic external stonemasonry structures.

How to erect basic external stonemasonry structures to a defined specification

Delivery Guidance:

The learner will need to be able to identify and know the principles of how to erect:

  • straight walling
  • coursed stone
  • modular units

The learner will need to be able to identify the difference between solid and cavity walls and their different applications.

The learner will need to know and understand how to apply the following erecting methods and techniques:

  • measure and maintain lengths and widths
  • measure and maintain the gauge and heights
  • measure, fix and secure wall ties
  • lay mortar
  • maintain coursing and bonding
  • check and maintain plumb & levels
  • insert damp proof membrane / course (DPM / DPC)
  • lift, position and bed stone components
  • finish joints
  • protect as appropriate

The learner will need to know and understand the following erecting terminology:

  • level and plumb
  • straight, true and square
  • gauge
  • cavity
  • bond and course
  • mortar
  • mass masonry wall
  • bed and finish
  • wall ties
  • damp proof membrane / course (DPM / DPC)

Use the identified methods, techniques and terminology to erect basic external stonemasonry structures to a defined specification

Delivery Guidance:

The following are considered to be basic wall structures:

  • straight walling
  • coursed stone
  • modular units

The solid wall must be a minimum of 1000mm long, 600mm high and 300mm wide

The cavity wall must be a minimum of 1000mm long, and 600mm high

The following types of walls must be erected:

  • solid wall
  • cavity wall*

*The inner leaf of the cavity wall can be an existing or pre-erected wall.

The following are considered to be relevant erecting methods and techniques:

  • measure and maintain lengths and widths
  • measure and maintain the gauge and heights
  • measure, fix and secure wall ties
  • lay mortar
  • maintain coursing and bonding
  • check and maintain plumb & levels
  • insert damp proof membrane / course (DPM / DPC)
  • lift, position and bed stone components
  • finish joints
  • protect as appropriate

The following are considered to be relevant erecting terminology:

  • level and plumb
  • straight, true and square
  • gauge
  • cavity
  • bond and course
  • mortar
  • bed and finish
  • wall ties
  • damp proof membrane / course (DPM / DPC)

Assessment Criteria:

  • The tutor must be satisfied that the learner can demonstrate how to erect basic external stonemasonry structures to a defined specification in line with the delivery guidance.
