  • Carry out a 5S audit of a work area to identify areas for improvement
  • Brainstorm ideas on how to improve their workplace organisation

This standard is predominantly practical training

This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level

Assessment Type

Informally Assessed

Quality assurance

Recognised

CITB will gain assurance through the Recognised Organisation’s quality arrangements.

Approved Training Organisation’s will be required to supply confirmation of approval (centre approval and scheme approval) with the related Recognised Organisation’s awarding organisation or body. In most cases this will be an approval certificate provided by the Recognised Organisation’s awarding organisation or body, listing the routes, qualifications, and categories they are approved to deliver. In addition, a copy of the most recent external quality assurance monitoring report will be required, relating to the standard that you wish to be approved for.

This information will be reviewed by CITB’s quality assurance team. Approval will be subject to the required Recognised Organisation’s documentation being supplied by you. As part of the quality assurance checks, CITB may confirm the accuracy of documentation with the issuing organisation.

Please refer to the Requirements for Approved Training Organisations Appendix 6 for further guidance on quality assurance.

Standard Classification

Lifetime (Please note standards using this classification will only be grant aided once per learner)

Additional information about this standard

This training standard is held by the Lean Construction Institute UK

This workshop is designed primarily as a practical, on-site activity requiring site access before, during, and after the first session. It follows a structured three-part schedule. However, the standard can also be delivered ‘classroom style’:

1. Workshop 1 – Initiate (3 hours)
This session introduces 5S principles using interactive tools (e.g. the 5S game), followed by practical on-site activities to identify improvement areas. Participants develop an action plan, with senior management approval secured during the session.

2. Workshop 2 – Check and Continue (2-3 hours)
Participants review progress against the baseline, quantify improvements, and discuss how to sustain and scale Lean practices. Successes, lessons learned, and barriers to progress are also explored.

Alternative Remote Delivery Option

For off-site or remote delivery, the workshop can be adapted by:

  • Focusing only on the 5S game and related video content
  • Replacing the site walk with relevant work or home-based improvement areas (e.g. cupboards, storage areas, sheds)

Workshops may also be split into smaller modules or run over flexible time intervals to suit participants' availability and location.

This module is suitable for managers, team leaders, and team members who are supporting or actively involved in Lean initiatives within the construction industry.

The training combines both theoretical and practical elements, with approximately 67% of the content focused on applied, hands-on learning in the workplace.
