This course covers the essential knowledge, skills and occupational behaviours to be a Construction Equipment Maintenance Mechanic in Construction Plant Repairs and Maintenance.
Course content
The course includes:
- Health and Safety legislations
- Behaviours in the construction industry
- Servicing and basic maintenance requirements and repairs for various types of machinery and equipment
- Hydraulic systems
- Electrical systems
- Pneumatic systems
- Power units and fuel systems
- Brake systems
- Transmission systems
- Undercarriage, steering and suspension
- Small Plant
- Bench fitting
- Welding and cutting.
You’ll also study personal skills. These include:
- Communication
- Planning
- Safe working practices
- Being a team player at work.
Teaching and assessment
On-the-job training alongside college-based training, split between classroom-based theory and practical sessions
College attendance is structured in blocks of 1 to 4 weeks
Assessment:
- Regular assessment by practical and written tasks, with constructive feedback
- Log of Progression, detailing knowledge, skills and behaviours
- Series of Apprenticeship Assessments (AA) including:
- Online knowledge test
- Practical assessments
- Professional interview

Entry requirements
Academic requirements:
While the need to study maths and English qualifications isn’t required for learners aged 19 and over, we believe these skills are important for success. That’s why we include industry-relevant maths and English lessons as part of our courses.
To make sure learners have the right skills to help them successfully achieve their apprenticeship programme, we ask for the below:
Level 2 Apprenticeship:
- Maths and English GCSE grades 3-9 (the same as old grades D-A), or equivalent
