Crane operation apprenticeship course

Structure: 12 weeks of training over 24 months, plus on-the-job experience

This two-year course teaches how to safely operate cranes and carry out basic maintenance and checks.

You’ll learn the duties of an ‘appointed person’, how to conduct risk assessments and produce method statements.

Course content

The course includes:

  • Crawler crane
  • Tower crane
  • Truck-mounted crane
  • Lorry loader
  • Telescopic handler
  • Slinger/signaller
  • Crane erection.

You’ll also study personal skills. These include:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Communication
  • Teaching and assessment.

Knowledge, skills and behaviours

  • Employment responsibilities and rights
  • Health and safety
  • Drug and alcohol awareness
  • Appointed person lifting operations.

Teaching and assessment

Year 1:

  • 12 weeks training: Classroom-based theory, practical training and assessments

Year 2:

  • Work-based experience with your employer

Assessment

  • A site visit to assess you for the NVQ level 2 in Plant Operations.
  • Our team will track you on site for whichever plant your employer selects for conversion to the NVQ and full Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) Competent Operator Card (blue card).

Entry requirements

Academic requirements:

While the need to study maths and English qualifications isn’t required for learners aged 19 and over, we believe these skills are important for success. That's why we include industry-relevant maths and English lessons as part of our courses.

To make sure learners have the right skills to help them successfully achieve their apprenticeship programme, we ask for the below:

Level 2 Apprenticeship:

  • Maths and English GCSE grades 3-9 (the same as old grades D-A), or equivalent

If you don't have these grades, contact our team. We can help you explore your options.

General requirements:

  1. Moderate level of physical fitness. Contact us if you’re not sure you meet requirements.
  2. Good communication skills.
  3. Comfortable with heights.
  4. Technical know-how.
  5. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.

Grants and funding

Apprenticeship grants are available for eligible employers. For further information please visit our grant pages.

Skills England (DfE) applicants are only guaranteed full funding if this is their first training scheme and they are aged between 16 and 18.
