Construction Plant Operative Apprenticeship

This apprenticeship teaches how to prepare, operate and maintain plant machinery. You’ll work as a Plant and Vehicle Marshall as part of the course.

Course content

The course includes:

  • Plant and vehicle marshalling
  • Safe operation and maintenance of plant machinery, such as:
    • Forward-tipping dumper or articulated dump truck
    • Ride-on roller
    • Telescopic handler (including suspended loads)
    • 360o excavator

You’ll also study personal skills. These include:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Drug and alcohol awareness
  • Time management
  • Teamwork and independent working
  • Attitude and discipline
  • Personal organisation
  • First aid.

  • Safe operation and maintenance of plant machinery
  • Health, safety and welfare
  • Risk assessments and method statements
  • Interpreting information
  • Effective communication
  • Customer relationships.

Teaching and assessment

18 weeks of training over at least 53 weeks, in the following blocks:

Block 1: 5 weeks

Block 2: 4 weeks

Block 3: 6 weeks

Block 4: 2 weeks

Assessment:

  • Regular assessment via a range of different methods 
  • College and site-based activity journals.

What you get

  • Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) Trained Operator Card (red card) while training
  • Competent Operator Card (blue card) after passing the final assessment
  • Minimum Level 1 Functional Skills

Entry requirements

Academic requirements:

While the need to study maths and English qualifications isn’t required for learners aged 19 and over, we believe these skills are important for success. That’s why we include industry-relevant maths and English lessons as part of our courses.

To make sure learners have the right skills to help them successfully achieve their apprenticeship programme, we ask for the below:

Level 2 Apprenticeship:

  • Maths and English GCSE grades 3-9 (the same as old grades D-A), or equivalent

If you don't have these grades, contact our team. We can help you explore your options.

General requirements:

  1. Good communication skills.
  2. Good level of physical fitness. Contact us if you’re not sure you meet requirements.
  3. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.

Grants and funding

Apprenticeship grants are available for eligible employers. For further information please visit our grant pages.

Skills England (DfE) applicants are only guaranteed full funding if this is their first training scheme and they are aged between 16 and 18.
