Typically duration would be 36 months working towards the apprenticeship standard, with a minimum of 20% of this spent in off-the-job training. College attendance is completed in blocks of 1 – 4 weeks duration and counts towards the off-the-job training. The period of the apprenticeship may be reduced for those holding relevant qualifications or a Level 2 apprenticeship meeting the employer’s selection criteria.

Course content
The course will aim to give the apprentice the Knowledge, Skills and Occupational Behaviours to become a Professional and Successful Construction Equipment Maintenance Technician. The role of a CEM Technician includes working on site utilising their own initiative in a customer facing role. They will be called on to diagnose and repair complex faults on machinery and plant. They may also be Supervising junior colleagues and dispensing advice to customers on machinery selection and repairs. The course content will include:
- An advanced understanding of the relevant legislation and safe working practices
- The control of company resources
- Diagnose faults using modern diagnostic equipment on the technologically advanced systems found on modern construction equipment and machinery.
- Advanced and modern Power units and associated fuels and components.
- Advanced Transmission fault diagnostics and repairs
- Advanced complex Hydraulic systems, diagnostics, and repairs.
- Advanced Electrical systems and Hydro Electrical diagnostic fault finding and repairs
- How to compile technical reports, repair proposals, quotations, and incident reports.
Teaching and assessment

A mixture of on-the-job training and supervision. College based training split between advanced Classroom theory sessions and complex workshop practical tasks. Maths and English mandatory requirements met.
Methods of Assessments
The apprentice will be regularly assessed during the college-based training via complex practical tasks and written assignments, which the instructor will give extensive constructive feedback to help the apprentice achieve the high standards. The apprentice will be expected to complete a Log of Progression, detailing the development of knowledge, skills, and behaviours. There will also be a series of End Point Assessments (EPA) which includes an Online knowledge test, Complex Practical Assessments, a Presentation and Professional interview.

Maths and English
The UK government has announced that adult learners over 19 no longer need formal English and maths qualifications for apprenticeships. However, apprentices must still show proficiency in these skills during their training.
At the National Construction College (NCC), we will continue to offer Level 1 and Level 2 English and Maths Functional Skills qualifications, along with Applied English and Maths for Construction sessions. These sessions focus on practical, industry-relevant skills to help apprentices succeed in their roles and pass their assessments.
We believe strong literacy and numeracy are crucial for personal and professional growth. By offering these qualifications and sessions, we ensure our apprentices gain essential skills for long-term success.
NCC Apprenticeship Entry Requirements
Level 3 Apprenticeship:
Applicants must have achieved Maths, English, Science and one other subject at:
- GCSE grades 4-9 (equivalent to old GCSE grades C-A)
or - Functional Skills Level 2 or above in Maths and English (if qualifications were taken after school).
