Overview

The Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test for Managers and Professionals, and its accompanying revision materials, has changed. The content has been updated to ensure that it is suitable for today’s managers and professionals, taking into consideration changes in legislation, working practices, new technology and industry needs.

Information on how to book a test can be found on the HS&E test and cards page.

The revision material consists of an app, a PC download and a revision book. Since the launch of the test, we have taken onboard feedback received from candidates about the test and the accompanying revision materials. To ensure that we are supporting candidates in revising for and passing their test, we have now streamlined some of the revision materials.

Why has the test changed?

Over time, the needs of the construction industry and that of the modern workforce will change. To ensure that the test remains relevant, fit for purpose and reflects changes made to legislation, working practices and new technology, we’ve updated both the test and the revision materials.

It is essential that managers and professionals are equipped with the most up-to-date and accurate information, so that they are able to confidently lead their teams on HS&E matters.

Our purpose is to support the construction industry in developing and maintaining a safe, skilled and competent workforce, both now and in the future. To do that, our tests must be relevant - it’s about keeping people safe. It’s that simple.

What are the changes?

Managers and professionals in the construction industry are responsible for complying with, embedding and implementing effective HS&E practices. Ultimately, this reduces the number of fatalities and accidents.

To support this, we have:

  • updated and extended the range of subjects covered in the test
  • updated existing questions and added new ones
  • updated our revision materials.

What new subjects does the test cover?

The test already covers six key areas, including:

  • Legal and management
  • Health and welfare
  • General safety
  • High risk activities
  • Environment
  • Specialist activities

However, based on industry feedback the following topics have been enhanced within the existing key areas.

  • Mental health
  • Leadership
  • Occupational health governance
  • Behavioural safety
  • New technologies
  • Improving legislative compliance.

What does this mean for me?

The test and revision materials have been updated to reflect changes made to legislation, working practices and new technology. The breadth of content is wider than any previous versions that you may have experienced, and is not role specific, which is why we are strongly recommending candidates allow sufficient time to revise and familiarise themselves with, what maybe for some, new subject matter.

Sample test

To support your revision we’ve created a sample test.

The sample test provides an indication of the different question types and subject areas included in the new MAP test. There are 14 questions for you to try.

The sample test should not be used in isolation, but as part of your revision.

The test

The test lasts for 45 minutes and consists of 50 questions. The pass mark is 90%, meaning you will need to correctly answer 45 questions.

To pass, you will need to demonstrate advanced knowledge and a broad understanding of HS&E compliance within a construction working environment. This is a thorough and wide-ranging test, which is broken down into sections, so that knowledge across all key areas can be demonstrated. Content is generalised,  and is not role specific.

The knowledge questions cover six key areas. There are four different styles of knowledge question that you may be presented with in your test:

  1. Multiple choice
  2. Multiple choice with images
  3. Reasoned judgement
  4. Option selection.

Pass mark

The pass mark for the Managers and Professionals test is 90%. To pass, you need to answer at least 45 out of 50 questions correctly. The pass mark has changed to ensure that there is consistency across all Health, Safety & Environment tests.
