Skills for a Sustainable Skyline Taskforce labour analysis
The Skills for a Sustainable Skyline Taskforce was established to identify and bridge skill gaps to ensure that Central London has a globally competitive, sustainable, commercial built environment.
It is a three-year project led by the City of London Corporation to boost the supply of skilled workers for sustainable buildings, bringing together employers, training providers and industry bodies from across the commercial built environment sector, as well as national and local government.
In August 2023 the Taskforce published The Skyline Skills Recommendations Report: Skyline Skills Report (cityoflondon.gov.uk) PDF, 9MB, highlighting the critical need for greater access to a skilled, diverse workforce which is trained and qualified to construct, retrofit, and manage the commercial buildings of tomorrow.
CITB was asked to support the Taskforce in gathering the evidence base, using their Labour Forecasting Tool to look at:
- the pipeline of commercial projects that were identified for Central London, including scale of work and timing, estimating the labour demand that this work would require
- assessing the scale of the challenge for retrofitting commercial buildings in Central London to improve energy performance and estimating the labour demand that this would require
- comparing this labour demand to the construction workforce in London, assessing how it related to job vacancies and training provision being delivered.
The links to the reports below cover the analysis that CITB provided, which helped to inform the work of the Skills for a Sustainable Skyline Taskforce.
