Overview

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to support the Heritage lead sheet decorative work and casting scope

Duration

15 days of 6 learning hours

Purpose/scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to support the following:

Scope:

  • understanding of the BS 6915 code of practice and industry design recommendations
  • correct use of welding equipment and hot work procedures
  • correct use of tools and equipment to fabricate and install lead sheet coverings and decorative details by bossing or welding
  • how to prepare fully supported ventilated lead roof coverings and cladding to historical heritage buildings
  • how to prepare and install decorative profiled features:
    • barrel vaulted roofs
    • domed roofs
    • spires
    • cupolas
  • how to prepare profiled coverings:
    • tapered
    • concave
    • convex
  • how to install fully supported, ventilated lead weathering’s and flashings to roof abutments interfaces and projections of historical buildings:
    • fascia’s
    • soffits
    • cornices
    • capping’s
    • valley gutters
    • parapet gutters
  • how to install lead roof projections
    • weathering slates
    • roof projections
    • ventilators
    • lead cast ornamentation
    • lead cast manufactured rainwater hoppers and downpipes
  • how to lead cast simple embellishments using sand box technique. Fabricate lead rainwater pipe with boxed hopper, bend and eared collar
  • understanding of the regulations when working on heritage buildings or within conservation areas
  • how to assess the appropriate method in which the work should be carried out also considering its historical nature
  • how to move materials to work areas including working at height and manual handling
  • correct way to recycle waste materials

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational groups:

  • operative and craft
  • supervision

Delegate pre-requisites

Delegates should have attended an intermediate level Lead Course and or be able to demonstrate their ability on a pre course assessment and have excellent knowledge of roofing terminology and techniques.

Instruction/supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
  • successfully completed training to this standard
  • at least 7 years relevant industrial experience
  • a verifiable CV

Delivery

Delivery will be off the job in a training environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • classroom
  • blend of classroom and remote

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more practical training.

This standard is considered to be set at an advanced level.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, delegates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures all learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.

Where this training is assessed using multiple-choice questions, a minimum of 10 questions must be asked and delegates are required to achieve an overall pass mark of at least 80%.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refresher requirements for this standard

Learning outcomes

The delegate will be able to:

  • interpret the British Standard code of practice and industry design recommendations
  • use tools and equipment to fabricate by bossing or welding details and install lead sheet roofing and coverings
  • carry out lead welding, use the equipment safely and implement hot work procedures considering the historical significance of the structures
  • set out and fabricate details for flat and pitched roofs by bossing or welding for historical buildings
  • prepare spire, dome or barrel vaulted module with underlay and set out joints and panels in a decorative manner
  • install hollow rolls to barrel vaulted roof module with ridge hip and eaves junction details
  • install wood cored rolls to barrel vaulted roof module with ridge, hip and eaves junction details
  • install welted joints to barrel vaulted roof module with ridge hip and eaves junction details
  • install hollow rolls in herringbone patten to spire or dome module with a suitable weathering detail at hip ridge and eaves
  • install wood cored rolls in herringbone patten to spire or dome module with a suitable weathering detail at hip ridge and eaves
  • install welted joints in conjunction with fascia’s capping’s cornices and soffits including suitable fixings and weathering details
  • install examples of parapet and valley gutters including chutes, sumps, outlets and overflows
  • fabricate simple embellishments using sand box casting technique
  • fabricate ornamental lead rainwater pipe with bend and eared collar
  • fabricate ornamental boxed hopper
  • clean all work areas and store scrap lead ready for recycling
